Rules & Regulations
Boating Safety Rules
All boaters on Hyco Lake are expected to follow these rules. Violations may result in removal from the lake and revocation of your boat permit.
No Alcohol or Drug Use
DO NOT operate watercraft under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This is illegal and extremely dangerous on the water.
Life Vest Requirements
Children 12 and under MUST wear life vests at all times while on boats. Everyone on board must wear a life jacket when the vessel is underway.
Wake & Speed Zones
Observe all posted speed limits and no-wake zones, especially near boat ramps, docks, and swimming areas. Excessive wakes can cause serious damage and injury.
Boat Permits Required
All motorized vessels must display a valid PCLA boat permit. Daily permits are $25; annual permits are $75 (valid Jan 1 – Dec 31). Permits must be purchased by June 1st or upon first launch.
Navigation & Visibility
Ensure your vessel has proper working lights for dawn, dusk, and nighttime operation. Always maintain a proper lookout and avoid distractions while operating a boat.
Boat Capacity
Never exceed the maximum capacity of your vessel. Overloading a boat is one of the leading causes of capsizing and boating fatalities.
Additional Lake Rules
- No swimming from boats in designated no-swim areas
- Do not anchor in or near boat lanes or traffic channels
- Report any boating accidents or hazards to PCLA immediately at (336) 599-4343
- Vessel operators are responsible for all passengers and their safety
- Water skiing and tubing must be done with a spotter on board
- Maintain a safe distance from other vessels, docks, and shorelines
- Keep the lake clean — no dumping of trash, fuel, or waste into the water
- Respect all buoys, markers, and posted signs on the lake
- PCLA is NOT responsible for lost boat permit stickers — if lost, a new permit must be purchased at standard fee

Hyco Lake Park offers both covered, gated and uncovered boat storage for your convenience.
- Both covered, gated and uncovered boat storage is available at Hyco Lake Park
- Contact the park office for availability and pricing
- Stored boats must display a current PCLA boat permit
- PCLA assumes no liability for damage to stored vessels
- Storage spaces are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis
